The GRADIENT: Why Taste Is the New Moat
This week, the creative economy is sending a clear message: efficiency is no longer the differentiator. Everyone has access to faster tools. The harder, and more valuable question is who knows what to do with them.
Google is giving media buyers more visibility into Performance Max. Agency leaders are reframing their value around judgment, integration, and business outcomes. Creators are moving beyond campaign add-ons and deeper into rights, commerce, and enterprise strategy. At the same time, the work that breaks through still feels unmistakably human: Cardi B translating polite conversation into what people really mean, a retail-media sitcom built around a grocery run, and emerging filmmakers getting a serious industry platform.
That is GRADIENT’s lane: the people, work, money, and opportunities shaping the full creative ecosystem, from the boardroom to behind the camera.
Let’s get into it.
Creative Moves
Weber Shandwick reshapes senior leadership
The agency named Joy Farber Kolo chief innovation and integration officer and Michael Wehman U.S. president, while Mike Rosich expands his remit as president of Weber Shandwick New York. Incoming CEO Karen Pugliese is scheduled to begin September 1.
Why it matters: Integration and innovation are being written directly into communications leadership.
Adobe elevates content and creative under Stacy Martinet
Martinet was recently appointed Adobe's chief content and creative officer, connecting teams, workflows, and audience strategy.
Why it matters: More brands are organizing creative operations like media companies, not campaign factories.
Vantage Data Centers names Ed Harnaga chief marketing and communications officer
The former Pfizer communications leader will oversee global brand, reputation, marketing, and communications.
Why it matters: AI infrastructure is becoming a mainstream brand and reputation story, not only a technology story.
M+C Saatchi Group ANZ moves toward local ownership
A management buyout led by CEO Dani Bassil is expected to complete October 1, subject to conditions.
Why it matters: Agency ownership models and the speed and autonomy they allow remain part of the competitive conversation.
The GRADIENT Brief
Agency Value is Being Reset
Agency value is being reset. As AI absorbs more execution, strategy, judgment, system design, and integration are moving closer to the center of the client relationship.
Media buyers are getting more PMax visibility
Media buyers are getting more PMax visibility. Google's updates include first-party audience exclusions, budget forecasting, expanded audience reporting, and network-level placement reporting.

Zevia and Cardi B turn subtext into the campaign
Zevia and Cardi B turn subtext into the campaign
Zevia's largest campaign to date, “Real Talk Interpreter,” puts Cardi B in everyday situations where she translates polite language into what people actually mean. The work spans streaming TV, video, social, retail, and a participatory layer inviting people to submit phrases through Instagram and TikTok.
Why it works: The product message “zero sugar, no pretending” is embedded in the format instead of pasted onto it. Cardi is not being used as borrowed reach; her established voice is the organizing idea.
What to borrow: When casting talent, start with the behavior or point of view audiences already associate with that person. Build the campaign mechanic around it.
Albertsons and P&G make retail media episodic
Albertsons and P&G make retail media episodic
Albertsons' “Rico's Tacos” is a short-form sitcom built around a grocery-store story, with P&G products integrated into one- to two-minute episodes. Distribution connects entertainment to commerce through store screens, QR codes, and the Albertsons app.
Creator + Influence
Creator strategy reaches the C-suite
Accenture's planned acquisition of Whalar and the current industry conversation around it show how quickly creator marketing is moving from a campaign specialty into enterprise growth strategy.
The GRADIENT read: The next competitive advantage will not be having a creator roster. It will be connecting creator relationships to paid amplification, social commerce, audience insight, and measurement without flattening the creator's voice.
Creator + Influence: sports creators become distribution partners
TikTok, the NBA, and the WNBA announced a multiyear global partnership that includes TikTok GamePlan. Eligible creators can receive access to league and game content for storytelling on the platform.
Why it matters for creators: Access to recognizable footage can raise production value and discovery—but rights, eligibility, permitted uses, and brand integrations need to be understood before publishing.
Why it matters for brands: Sports creators are becoming distribution partners with real content access, not simply commentators reacting from the outside.
Film, TV + Production
Venice publishes its 2026 competition lineup
TIFF announced its 2026 Gala and Special Presentations slate ahead of the September 10–20 festival. Venice has also published its competition lineup, giving distributors, publicists, producers, craftspeople, and awards strategists an early view of the fall conversation.
Why it matters behind the camera: Festival announcements begin a second production cycle—press assets, trailers, talent logistics, social cutdowns, photography, EPKs, clearances, accessibility materials, and awards positioning.
BAFTA Student Awards draw more than 600 university submissions
The 2026 BAFTA Student Awards drew more than 600 university submissions across animation, documentary, live action, games, and immersive work. The July 17 Los Angeles event, presented with e.l.f. Cosmetics, offered visibility and mentorship to emerging talent.
Why it matters: Smart brand partnerships can fund access and professional development while building cultural credibility—when the talent, not the sponsor, remains the story.
Behind the Work
The new production brief has two audiences
The Zevia and Albertsons campaigns reveal a useful production shift: every asset increasingly has to work for both the viewer and the distribution system.
The viewer needs character, tension, pacing, humor, or utility. The system needs modular edits, platform-safe framing, measurable calls to action, clean rights, and enough variations to travel across paid, owned, retail, and creator channels.
For producers, editors, directors, creators, and production companies, that means the deliverables conversation belongs at the beginning of the creative process.
Ask before the shoot:
Which cut is the hero, and which cuts are designed for discovery?
Who owns the raw footage, outtakes, stills, and creator-posted versions?
Where can the work run—paid, organic, retail, streaming, internal, global?
How long is the usage term?
Does the budget include cutdowns, captions, translations, and versioning?
That is not administrative cleanup. It is part of the creative architecture.
Media + Money
Media + Money: what the Performance Max update does and does not solve
Google is rolling out more steering and reporting for Performance Max, including first-party audience exclusions, campaign-level budget projections, expanded audience reporting, and network segmentation in placement reports.
The opportunity: Buyers can get a clearer view of who campaigns reach, where ads appear, and how budgets may pace.
The watch-out: More reporting is useful, but it does not replace incrementality testing, clean first-party data, or an explicit brand-safety review.
Buyer checklist:
Test exclusions against an acquisition goal.
Compare projected spend with actual pacing weekly.
Review network-level placements, not only blended performance.
Document what the platform optimized—and what your team decided.
PR + Comms
PR + Comms: communications leadership is being asked to connect the system
This week's leadership moves point to a wider shift: communications executives are being asked to connect reputation, content, innovation, and internal systems—not simply manage external messaging.
Adobe's consolidation of content and creative leadership and Weber Shandwick's emphasis on innovation and integration both support the same conclusion.
What communicators should watch: If an AI-enabled workflow changes how a company serves customers or makes creative work, communications needs a seat before rollout—not after a problem becomes a headline.
Business of Creative
Business of Creative: what a scope has to answer before kickoff
A good scope protects the relationship as much as it protects the work. Before kickoff, make sure the agreement answers:
Deliverables: What exactly is being made, in which formats, and by when?
Revisions: How many rounds are included, and what counts as a new request?
Usage: Where, for how long, and in which territories may the work, name, image, or likeness be used?
Money: What is the fee, payment schedule, late-payment policy, expense process, and cancellation or kill fee?
Rights and AI: Who owns the final work and source files? Can either party use the work, footage, voice, or data to train or operate AI systems? May the creative show the work in a portfolio?
GRADIENT note: Do not rely on a text thread for terms that affect money, ownership, or usage. Put the final agreement in writing and have a qualified attorney review language when the stakes justify it.
